The history of the Union Canal House dates all the way back to 1751 when it was known as “Ye Olde Tavern”. It played host to soldiers from French and Indian and American Revolutionary wars. A tunnel, that is still visible in the basement today, allowed the troops to move safely from their fort directly into the pub so they could enjoy fine food and spirits
According to legend, this tunnel may also have been used as part of the Underground Railroad to aid slaves who were escaping to freedom.
